Krabi

Like Phuket and Koh Samui in the early 1970's, Krabi was accidentally "discovered" by intrepid backpackers and cruising yachts only in the 1980's. Shops, accomodation and restaurants are going upscale and spreading along the coast.
Krabi’s popularity with escapist traveles is not difficult to understand. It has several beautiful beaches with clear water ideal for snorkeling and diving, towering limestone cliffs, caves, mangrove forests, a national park (Khao Phanom Bencha) full of interesting wildlife, and access by boat to more than 80 scenic offshore islands.

Beaches : Krabi’s beaches are relatively unspoiled and exceptionally beautiful.

Hat Nang, the most easily accessible beach from Krabi town, is on wide, shallow bay. There are dozens of resorts with many amenities.
Nopparat Thara, 18 km from Krabi, is a casuarina-lined strand that is part of the national park including the Phi-Phi islands.
Hat Rai Lai, to the east of Laem Phra Nang, two beaches sandwich all the lodgings, framed by mammoth rocks , with an extensive coral reef in the south.
Hat Su San Hoi (shell cemetery) is located in Ban Laem Pho, about 10 miles from Krabi town. Countless petrified shells have formed immense slabs of rock along the beach.

Caves : The limestone montains around Krabi contain a large variety of splendid caves.

Wat Tham Sua, down a jungle trail about 2 miles from Krabi town, is a noted Buddhist monastery for meditation.
Tham Lot and Tham Phi, two unspoiled caves, can be reached by boat.
Tham Phra Nang Nok (princess cave) lies to the west of Cape Phra Nang.

Boats can be hired for trips to the Phi-Phi islands from both Ao Nang and Krabi town. But there are many closer offshore islands that good for swimming and diving : Koh Dam, Koh Dam Hok, Koh Dam Khwan.

Koh Lanta

The latest island candidate to be the "new Samui" is Koh Lanta, with new investment only mildly denting its sleepy, local caracter.
Reached from Krabi or Trang airport by road and boat.
Dogging the sheltered east coast mangroves are destructive prawn farms and quaint fishing villages of Muslims and Sea Gypsies.
The rugged west has a string of fine beaches, from the busy Hat Khlong Dao, where backpackers gather to party, down progressively tortuous roads to the relatively uninteresting national park headquaters at the southern.
On the long, swimmable beaches in between, new resorts have earned plaudits for their sleek designs.
